Varde for Apple TV and iPad — last updated 22 September 2026
The app collects nothing. There is no account, no analytics, no tracking, no advertising identifier, and no server belonging to us that the app talks to. Varde runs on your Apple TV or iPad and talks to your cameras on your own network.
What stays on your devices
- Your camera list — name, address, identifier and preferences. Stored in your own iCloud key-value storage so the same list appears on your other Apple devices. It is your iCloud account; we have no access to it.
- Camera passwords — stored in the iCloud keychain, which is end-to-end encrypted by Apple. They are never written in plain text and never leave Apple's encrypted storage. Removing a camera removes its password with it.
- Still images — the most recent picture from each camera, kept in the app's cache on the device so the home screen has something to show. Deleting a camera deletes its picture. Nothing is uploaded.
- Video and recordings — streamed directly from the camera to the Apple TV or iPad while you watch. Nothing is recorded or forwarded, apart from the single still image described above.
The local network permission on iPad
The first time Varde looks for cameras, iPadOS asks whether the app may find and connect to devices on your local network. That permission is used for one thing: talking to your cameras and recorders at their local addresses. Varde does not enumerate other devices, keeps no list of what it finds beyond the cameras you add, and sends nothing off your network. If you decline, the app cannot reach any camera; you can change the answer in Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network.
Fault reports — only if you choose to send one
When a camera will not play, Varde can hand you a technical report as a web address. On
Apple TV it appears as a QR code; on iPad it goes through the system share sheet. The
device does not send it anywhere: the report sits in the address itself, after
the #, and a browser never sends that part to a server. It travels only when
you have opened it, read it, and pressed send.
The report is built so it cannot carry:
- your camera password or your Wi-Fi key
- the name of your Wi-Fi network
- the name you gave the camera
- your camera's full identifier — only the first eight characters, which say which series the device is
- a public IP address; the local address (192.168.x.x) travels because a camera on an unexpected address is a real fault
It does carry:
- the camera model, firmware and hardware version
- battery level, Wi-Fi signal strength and uptime
- the codec, the resolution and how far the video got
- error, packet and message counters
- the error text from the failure, with any credentials stripped out
- the camera's local address, for the reason above
- the app version and build, the device model and the tvOS or iPadOS version
If you type an email address or a comment on that page, those travel too — because you wrote them. The report is delivered to the developer through Netlify Forms and used only to fix the fault.
Purchases
The one-time purchase is handled by Apple through the App Store. Varde sees only whether the purchase exists on your Apple Account; it never sees your payment details. The same purchase covers Apple TV and iPad.
Children
Varde is not directed at children and collects nothing from anyone.
